HOW TO START A BUSINESS IN UTAH

After being away from Utah for 20 years, I found  myself back home again. I have been an entrepreneur for over 15 years. Although I am not  new to running my own business, I am new to running a business in Utah. Every state is different, so I had to go back to step one and learn all things that it takes to run a legit business in Utah. Let me show you how to start a business in Utah.

Utah is known for its strong economy, low taxes, and entrepreneur-friendly policies, Utah has become a major hub for startups, small businesses, and side hustlers alike. Whether you’re launching a tech startup in Silicon Slopes or opening a trendy boutique in a small town, this guide will walk you through the essential steps to get your business up and running legally and successfully in the Beehive State.

Why Utah Is a Great Place to Start a Business

Before we dive into the logistics, let’s talk about why starting a business in Utah is such a smart move:

      • Low cost of living compared to other business hubs

      • Business-friendly regulations and low corporate taxes

      • A highly educated workforce and growing tech scene

      • Access to gorgeous outdoor recreation for that all-important work-life balance

Maybe I am biased, but Utah is a great place to live, but also a great place to start a business. There are so many amazing entrepreneurs in Utah and I am always feeling inspired.

How to Start a Business in Utah

Step 1: Choose a Business Idea

Every successful business starts with an idea. But before investing time or money, validate your concept:

        • Identify your target market

        • Determine your unique value proposition

You can also explore resources from the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity to help assess market needs.

Step 2: Write a Business Plan

A business plan is your roadmap to success. It will guide your decisions and make it easier to secure funding. Include:

          • Executive summary

          • Market analysis

          • Business model

          • Marketing and sales strategy

          • Financial projections

Use templates from SBA.gov or get help from the Utah Small Business Development Center.

Step 3: Choose a Business Structure

One of the most important decisions when starting a business in Utah is selecting your business structure:

            • Sole Proprietorship

            • Limited Liability Company (LLC)

            • Corporation (C-Corp or S-Corp)

            • Partnership

Most small businesses choose an LLC for flexibility and liability protection. You can compare structures on the IRS website. I started with an LLC, but later changed to a S-Corp. I recommend consulting a professional before you make a decision.

          Step 4: Register Your Business

To legally operate in Utah, you need to register your business with the state. Here’s how:

              1. Check Name Availability via the Utah Business Entity Search

              1. Register Online through the Utah OneStop Business Registration

              1. Apply for Local Licenses through your city or county office

You’ll also want to apply for a free EIN (Employer Identification Number) from the IRS.

Step 5: Understand State and Federal Taxes

When starting a business in Utah, you need to understand your tax obligations:

                • Utah Income Tax: Flat rate of 4.65%

                • Federal Taxes: Based on your business structure

                • Self-Employment Tax: For sole proprietors and single-member LLCs

Consult the Utah State Tax Commission for forms, resources, and assistance.

Step 6: Set Up Business Finances

Separate your business and personal finances immediately by:

                  • Applying for a business credit card

This step protects you legally and makes it easier to stay organized for taxes and bookkeeping.

Step 7: Obtain Permits and Licenses

Depending on your industry, you may need permits or licenses to legally operate in Utah. Examples:

                    • Home occupation permits from your city or county

Use the Utah Business License Wizard to determine exactly what you need.

                  Step 8: Protect Your Business

Don’t wait for something to go wrong—protect yourself and your assets from day one:

                      • Draft legal contracts using tools like HelloSign or consult a local attorney

If you’re hiring, be sure to follow Utah labor laws.

Step 9: Build Your Online Presence

Even brick-and-mortar businesses need an online home. Set yourself up for success by:

Registering a domain via Google Domains or Godaddy

                        • Claiming your Google Business Profile

                        • Creating social media profiles on platforms where your audience hangs out

Pro Tip: Use relevant keywords like “starting a business in Utah” on your website to improve your SEO.

                      Step 10: Market Your Business

Congrats—you’re ready to share your business with the world! Start with:

                          • Listing your business on local directories
