Business Law with Brittany Ratelle
Today I talk with Brittany about things in our business that we may not think about. That is, getting your business organized when it comes to all things legal.
The following are the things that we address in the podcast:
- Brittany talks about getting an LLC and why she recommends getting one earlier rather than later.
- Trademarking…when is it a necessity? How important is it to trademark your business when it is your own name? Brittany also shares information about filing for a trademark.
- Content and Creative works is another topic we focus on. Brittany shares two tools you can use to protect your creative works.
- Copyright- protects the “creative guts” of something. Brittany goes into the details and recommends getting a registration of your copyrights.
- Contracts- are the right vehicle to talk about the rights of a particular creative work. She also covers the difference between terms and conditions and a contract.
- Brittany shares other tips and important things you need to know as an entrepreneur. There seems to be a lack of awareness on issues such as reposting content when sharing others work (even when you tag them)…you must be careful of copyright infringement.
- She also shares tips for content creatives. Be sure that you have all the rights for the pictures that are posted on your blog. Be careful not to drop in photos from other sites into your own blog- they could be copyrighted!
- Lastly, Brittany shares her pet peeves and her simple pleasure!
Take your business seriously. Having legal is part of being a business owner. Establishing proper boundaries, a clear expectation a good contract is nothing to fear. These are so important for your business.
