Haitian Roots with Chareyl Moyes

Learn more about Haitian Roots with Chareyl Moyes on the Redefine Podcast. Haitian Roots is a nonprofit organization committed to empowering underserved Haitian children through education. This organization started in 2005 and now has two schools with nearly 500 students. Haitian Roots  believes that education is the key to changing Haitian society. Not only do they education children, but they help and educate parents, teachers, and communities. They get everyone involved and use Haitian resources to ultimately empower the Haitian people and support their economy.  Haitian Roots relies upon donations and 100% of funds go toward educating and the betterment of Haiti.

What IS Discussed on the podcast?

  • Brittni’s first introduction too this nonprofit was when she visited Haiti during the opening of their first school. She shares her impressions and why she feels this information needs to be shared.
  • Chareyl shares how she adopted a Haitian child, which was her motivation to do more in Haiti. After covered what they really needed, she found that education trumps everything. Empower others to be self reliant is critical. Their goal is to teach the people of Haiti that they don’t need to rely on others to save them. They can save themselves…hope is found within themselves.
  • After seeing the poverty of Haiti, sponsoring 2 children and meeting their family, Brittni wanted to do more! She asked Chareyl if they could donated some money to the family and was surprised by the response she got. Brittni then goes on to share two things she has learned from Charyel…

Two Things Chereyl Taught Brittni:

  1. Sometimes helping hurts. After offering monetary assistance, she came to recognize that sometimes when we think we are helping by giving someone something… unless we are allowing them to earn it, we really aren’t helping them.

Chareyl goes on to tell about the orphanage crisis. People with the greatest of hearts can donate money to things such as orphanages, but really this support is actually fueling the problem in Haiti. Chareyl says that nearly 85% of children in the orphanages there have living parents. When a parent reaches a point where they think that the orphanage will give their child better care and food etc, then they turn their child over.

Another example of how helping hurts sometimes was after an earthquake. There was talk about others coming into the country to set up free hospitals. She shares what she learned from the owner of the hospital there as to why exactly this would do more harm than good to the people of Haiti and what would really help their people and economy. Sometimes we don’t know exactly what the people need until you go, and you talk to the right people and you see what the true need is.

Chareyl said this… ” When you learn something and you know more and you know better… you need to do better.”

     2. When sharing her big plan to help with Chareyl, Brittni learned that there’s a lot of talk and no action out there. Stop talking and take action. It is all about taking action and being the change.

Brittni also talks about how serving others feels best when nobody is looking and about nonprofits. Brittni has a nonprofit and has had several people ask how hard is it to have a nonprofit? They cover the challenges of having a nonprofit and a key take away from Chareyl. That is – don’t reinvent the wheel. Partner up!
