Haitian Roots with Chareyl Moyes

Learn more about Haitian Roots with Chareyl Moyes on the Redefine Podcast. Haitian Roots is a nonprofit organization committed to empowering underserved Haitian children through education. This organization started in 2005 and now has two schools with nearly 500 students. Haitian Roots  believes that education is the key to changing Haitian society. Not only do they education children, but they help and educate parents, teachers, and communities. They get everyone involved and use Haitian resources to ultimately empower the Haitian people and support their economy.  Haitian Roots relies upon donations and 100% of funds go toward educating and the betterment of Haiti.

What IS Discussed on the podcast?

  • Brittni’s first introduction too this nonprofit was when she visited Haiti during the opening of their first school. She shares her impressions and why she feels this information needs to be shared.
  • Chareyl shares how she adopted a Haitian child, which was her motivation to do more in Haiti. After covered what they really needed, she found that education trumps everything. Empower others to be self reliant is critical. Their goal is to teach the people of Haiti that they don’t need to rely on others to save them. They can save themselves…hope is found within themselves.
  • After seeing the poverty of Haiti, sponsoring 2 children and meeting their family, Brittni wanted to do more! She asked Chareyl if they could donated some money to the family and was surprised by the response she got. Brittni then goes on to share two things she has learned from Charyel…

Two Things Chereyl Taught Brittni:

  1. Sometimes helping hurts. After offering monetary assistance, she came to recognize that sometimes when we think we are helping by giving someone something… unless we are allowing them to earn it, we really aren’t helping them.

Chareyl goes on to tell about the orphanage crisis. People with the greatest of hearts can donate money to things such as orphanages, but really this support is actually fueling the problem in Haiti. Chareyl says that nearly 85% of children in the orphanages there have living parents. When a parent reaches a point where they think that the orphanage will give their child better care and food etc, then they turn their child over.

Another example of how helping hurts sometimes was after an earthquake. There was talk about others coming into the country to set up free hospitals. She shares what she learned from the owner of the hospital there as to why exactly this would do more harm than good to the people of Haiti and what would really help their people and economy. Sometimes we don’t know exactly what the people need until you go, and you talk to the right people and you see what the true need is.

Chareyl said this… ” When you learn something and you know more and you know better… you need to do better.”

     2. When sharing her big plan to help with Chareyl, Brittni learned that there’s a lot of talk and no action out there. Stop talking and take action. It is all about taking action and being the change.

Brittni also talks about how serving others feels best when nobody is looking and about nonprofits. Brittni has a nonprofit and has had several people ask how hard is it to have a nonprofit? They cover the challenges of having a nonprofit and a key take away from Chareyl. That is – don’t reinvent the wheel. Partner up!

Facebook Groups For Your Business

If you have a business, more than likely you have a Facebook Page.  Online marketing is constantly changing and as a whole, we are all yearning for more connection and personalized interaction. We have the need to feel like part of a community and to belong.  This is something you can create for your potential clients through Facebook groups.  When you understand how you can use Facebook groups to improve your business.

What is the difference between a Facebook page and a Facebook group?

A Facebook Business Page is similar to your website. You display your contact information, portfolio, latest happenings, and your recent content.

A Facebook Group is a page hosted by a person or business that invites and gathers people to become part of a community. Members can post their thoughts and questions and have the ability to interact with other members. It is a place to support one another and build each other up in an interactive community. A Facebook Group is another tool you can leverage to build the know, like and trust” factor in your business.

I have a Facebook Group for my business. There are several reasons that I love using a Facebook Group for my business and I will get into those, but first I want to walk you through the set up, because this will be important to help your business grow.

NAMING YOUR GROUP

Sometimes we want to come up with a clever name or a play on words, but its a better idea to include keywords in your group name. For example, if I want to create a group for business women, I might use words like a female entrepreneur, mom boss, girl boss, lady,  etc.

Using appropriate keywords will help your group rank in Facebook search results.  If someone is searching for a group and type in a keyword like business women and your group has that in the title, your group is more likely to show up. Also, Facebook will start recommending your group to people with similar interests. This is a great way to gain more members.

DESCRIPTION

Similar to the group name, you want to utilize the most ideal keywords in the description.  What would your ideal client be searching for?  Try to saturate your description with those keywords by still remaining authentic.
Your description will be visible to people who are not currently members.  Create a keyword-rich description of who the group is for and the benefits of joining.  For example, I might write something like this:
A group dedicated to all women in business. Its a community for female entrepreneurs to share questions, get advice, feel inspired and find support and friendship.

TAGS

Facebook will prompt you to list tags.  Tags are words that are associated with your group. This helps Facebook understand the nature of your group and also recommend to people with similar interests.  Tags are your keywords so use your best ones in this section.

Whenever you are setting up any profile on any platform make sure you understand each field and optimize it.

COVER PHOTO

Similar to your Facebook Business page you will need a cover photo. I use Canva to create mine.  Make sure to put the title of your group on your cover photo and that the image is relevant to the group.

PRIVACY SETTINGS

This next step is really important and I am going to explain why. You want to set your group to private. This means people have to request to join and you have to approve them. This allows you to make sure the people in your group are ideal client or audience. You have to approve people to let them in your group so you are able to decline someone who may not be a good fit. The privacy setting brings us to the next setting.

MEMBERSHIP REQUEST

When your group is private you have the option of asking people questions before they join the group.  Use these questions to understand your members.  Depending on the group but you can ask them what they do, what they are hoping to get from the group, what they do, etc.  One of your questions most defiantly needs to be a question requesting their email address. With that being said you need to frame the question in a way that people will want to give you their email address.  You can ask for their email address so you can send them weekly tips and tricks so they dont miss anything or tell them you want to send them a free gift and send them a freebie. Whatever you decide make sure it is enticing. This one of my favorite tools that I use to grow my email list.

GROUP RULES

Consider your objective when you write your group rules.  You dont want your Facebook group to turn into an infomercial, so you might want one of the rules to be no self-promoting or self-promoting only on designated days. Another rule can be to always be polite and respectful to others in the group.  You want your group rules to represent your brand and you dont want any negativity associated with your brand.

You can also set the post settings so you have to approval all posts. I would recommend this. That way you have more control over what is being posted and also, make sure people aren’t posting anything that doesn’t align with your values.

CONNECTION

A Facebook group is a great way to build a community and connect with potential clients. Because your group targets a specific audience, the conversations are more intentional. You want the group to be of value and benefit all the members. Your audience is looking for a genuine connection. Use your group to share your life, interests, and hobbies with your audience.  Try to create a meaningful relationship that is more friend-like and less business-like.

This is a great tool to start conversations and to learn what your audience needs and wants. You can use your Facebook Group for market research and to promote your offers. I try to stick with the 80/20 rule. Which is give people 80% what they want and 20% what they need. So try to serve and help way more than you try to sell.

GROUPS FOR EVENTS

Creating a group for an event or a course is a great way to answer questions and help the masses.  You can create a group and encourage your customers or clients to join the group for support.  The group can discuss what is working for them or what isnt working for them.  This can also be a hub for encouragement and motivation.

You could also use a similar group for the launch of a longer-length course.  The participants can have ongoing support by sharing questions, struggles and wins with the group. This helps keeps members accountable and engaged.  A Facebook group is a great resource to offer as part of a program or as a bonus.

Facebook Groups are another social media platform, and as with all platforms, consistency is key. The success of your Facebook group is dependent on engagement and interaction.  Your objective is to create value and connection. If you decide to start a Facebook group, ensure you can commit the time and effort required to build a community.

10 Things Every Business Website Should Have

A potential client is looking for your service or product and they land on your website. This is their first impression of you & your work. Are you assured your website has the power to sell them on your services? If you take time to curate your website, you’re more likely to get the results you are wanting.  Here are 10 things every business should incorporate in their website:

FaceBook Pixel

A Facebook pixel is a must-have component. It sounds more complicated than it is, but a Facebook pixel is a snippet of code that you add to your site that automatically tracks your website traffic and visitors.  This information helps you learn about the people engaging with your content.

The pixel allows you to run targeted ads to your ideal client. Whether you decide to run ads or not, you’ll still want to install the pixel.  It gathers information over time and you will have information from past visitors available to help you create a successful ad campaign.

Email Opt-In

If you don’t have an email list—get one! Email lists are one of the few things we have complete control over.  Make it a priority to consistently grow your email list.  Create an enticing email opt-in on your website.  You are far more likely to get someone to give you their email if you are offering an awesome freebie in exchange for their email.

Be mindful of your ideal client when creating a freebie. Think of something that will create value for them and leave them wanting more. This could be a checklist, a guide, cheat sheet, e-book, a course, or a worksheet.  Whatever it is, make sure your audience will find it useful.

Easy Access to Social Media

Social media is a great way to really connect with your audience.  By posting both curated and unscripted versions of yourself, you can build the “know, like, and trust” factor with your people. Make it really easy for your website visitors to continue the connection.

The footer of your website is a great place for social media buttons.  Make sure that your icons appear on every page of your website. That way no matter what page they land on, visitors can find and follow you easily.

Photos Of You

People are loyal to people—not logos.  Include at least one picture of yourself on the website. You want people to know you are human and that you exist in the world.  This kind of connection helps people put a face with a name. It helps create trust.

The obvious place to put your picture is the About Me section, but try to add a few more images on your website.  Especially if you’re a solopreneur or service-based business. Try to push beyond the traditional headshots and incorporate some lifestyle photos showcasing your personality.  Hire a photographer to do a branding photoshoot and post those images throughout your website.

Good Copy

Use verbiage and copy that speaks to your audience.  Try to avoid over using the word “I”.  You want your potential client to know that you are there to serve them and to help them get results.

Figure out what they struggle with and offer solutions in your copy. Attempt to speak directly to the audience you are trying to attract.  Readers want to know why they should trust you and a big part of that trust is knowing what they are struggling with and how you can help them.

Search Engine Optimization

SEO is a big part of any online business.  SEO will draw the right people to your website.  Learn and understand keywords and implement them throughout the copy on your website. Make sure your keywords are authentic and organic.  Avoid keyword overuse because people will notice and maybe put off.  Organic search is our biggest website referral source.

Testimonials

Having social proof on your website validates your business. Testimonials and reviews are powerful tools to help you secure more clients.  I don’t know about you, but I rarely buy a product without reading the reviews first. Testimonials show your audience that you deliver on your promises and that clients love working with you.

Testimonials are one of the most effective tools to build trust.  Establishing trust is a necessity for booking clients. If your clients can give you data and numbers, that shows how much you have improved their business.

Place testimonials throughout your website.  Add 1-3 on your homepage, service page, and any sales pages. You may also consider dedicating a page specifically for client testimonials.

Mobile - Friendly

A large part of website traffic is viewed mobile devices.  Take the time to ensure that your website is optimized for mobile devices.  Your website should be user-friendly on mobile devices and easy to navigate. Take the time to resize images and text so they look good on any device and the content can be viewed continuously.

Call To Action

Always conclude with a call to action.  That might be to sign up for your newsletter list, get a hold of you directly, or book your services.  Don’t miss out on clients because they don’t know what to do next. In addition to a contact page on your website, include several different options for engagement throughout the site.

Always keep the momentum moving forward with potential clients. However that might translate—whether it’s getting to know you better through social media or signing up for a newsletter—lead them there.

User Friendly

Create an innovative and creative website but be sure to provide an easy way to navigate and obtain all the information. Try to avoid websites that are overly busy with too much information.  Your website should clear and concise.

Avoid long paragraphs, hard-to-read fonts, or complicated navigation menus. When linking resources or calls to action, use words like “click here”.  Although there are many dazzling online features available, keep your audience in mind when creating your website. Sometimes less is more.

Does your business website include these 10 essentials? If not, implement them to help you up-level your business! Ensuring that your website serves your audience and demonstrates that you can help your ideal clients get results will significantly improve your business. Take the time to learn, understand, and create an effective website and before you know it, you’ll be turning fans into clients!

Graham Swim with Abby Studdert

Abby Studdert is a long time friend of Britnni. She is a Business owner of Graham Swim which sells amazing swimsuits. She has an online botique. Abby comes from a long line of an entreupeneral family, from having her paretns being the inverntors and founders of SquattyPotty. The marketing genes have always been in her blood. She began with just writing in a journal with her ideas. From doing MLM to home shops selling jewelry, Abby always strived for success, and she wasn’t afraid of failure. This is Graham Swim with Abby Studdert

My Story

Her first real business was when she started selling jewelry with her sister, which gave her her drive. One thing she has learned from this is that money does not come for free and you have to work super hard to succeed.

The key to success is consistency, showing up, and the willingness to fail to discover what works and what doesnt. If you can handle that then you can keep going until you succeed. Her business is primarily online, she had done a retreat and she recieved a great return for her business. But these dont always work and you have to accept the failure and try again. Abby is an amazing networker, which is one of her superpowers. This is the key to success, especially as an entrepreneur, is being able to network to create these connections to help your business get out there.

The journey to success has so many paths and ways to get there. But some people have the talent to be able to naturally create connections and netwroking easily, although, this can always be learned with hard work. For Abby this had come natural.

Always find your stronsuits and work and your weaknesses. Lean on those strongsuits and use them to help on your path to success.

Tips on Growth Strategy

Abby has learned with her connections how to strive on social media through trial and error. No one has it fully figured out, but we can try to get close. This world is so competitive and i have some great connections that have helped me become great at social media. Influencers definetly play a part in brand marketing. we have found great success in reaching out to micro influencers and also large influencers. Its just determining where you want to put your money and what actually works.

Always find your stronsuits and work and your weaknesses. Lean on those strongsuits and use them to help on your path to success.

You contantly have to be learning and progressing from your failures.

Abby’s Brand comes with the quote “Just put on the suit”. Her daughter and her started their business, when they started they saw this need for an all about body positivity look in the swimsuit world. Swimsuits are hard, you feel vulnerable at times and its hard to be able to feel confident in swimsuits. We tend to be our hardest critics, even when others dont notice the flaws we believe to have. We are all on our different journey in life, and we wanted to show in our brand to not allow your vulnerablities to stop you from what you want to do, so “Just put on the suit” and enjoy how you are now in the moment and start living without fear!!

HOW TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL
BRANDING PHOTOSHOOT

How To Plan A Successful Branding Photoshoot

Before you hire a photographer, you need to have a clear branding strategy. You want to have a plan. Understanding the look, feel, and content that supports your brand will ensure you get what you need in your branding photo shoot. The more details and specifics you have prepared, the more likely you will be happy with your images.

People are not loyal to logos. They are loyal to people.  Entrepreneurs trying to sell to clients must create a feeling of trust and loyalty. Essentially, you are selling yourself.  Entrepreneurs often struggle posting pictures of themselves, but this is essential so you can connect with your potential clients. If you want to build a solid brand, you need to show up. Branding photos are key.  I am going to tell you what to expect and how to have a successful branding photoshoot.

FIND THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

Find an experienced photographer whose aesthetic is cohesive with your brand. Photographers are going to put on their website and social media what they want to attract and what they are good at.

If your ideal client is a straightforward executive and you want your brand to reflect that, you might look for a photographer who specializes in portrait photography. Their portfolio might consist of headshots with a plain background and little movement in the images.

If your ideal client is a creative who is also a stay-at-home mom with a more carefree lifestyle, you would want to look for more of a lifestyle photographer who specializes in candid or behind-the-scenes style of photography. Their portfolio might consist of people laughing in pictures, action shots, casual pictures sitting on the couch or eating at a restaurant.

Search for photographers who have a similar feel to your brand. Look at their reviews on Facebook and Google.  Most photographers put their best images on their website, but look through their blog to get an idea of what a full session might look like.  Ask to see an entire session so you know what you can expect with your images.

Try to meet with your photographer in person or via FaceTime before your session so you can start to build a relationship and feel comfortable around each other.  You can learn a lot about your photographer through communication. Make note of their communication and level of professionalism. You want to make sure you find a photographer that you can connect with, but also depend on to deliver exactly what you want.

INSPIRATION BOARD

poses, accessories, props and anything else that is related to your brand. The great thing about Pinterest is it allows you to search for specific topics. You can get pretty specific with your search and find a ton of examples of what others in your industry are doing.

Share your board or specific images with your photographer to ensure you are on the same page.

STYLING YOUR SHOOT

Your outfits dont need to match all your branding colors, but you want them to be cohesive with them.  For example, if your colors are all natural tones, dont come to the shoot in a neon pink blazer. Be mindful of how the images will look on your website or social media with your branding colors.

Pick outfits that fit with your location. If you are shooting outdoors in a grassy field, you wont want to wear high heels and a pencil skirt. Decide what types of clothing will look best with your location.

Choose outfits that are flattering to your body type. Remember, just because you look good in something doesnt mean it will necessarily photograph well. Or just because it is in style doesn’t mean you should be wearing it. Let’s be honest there are few trends that probably nobody should be wearing these days. Just sayin.

If you are self-conscious of certain parts of your body, try to cover them or make them less obvious. Avoid clothing that is too tight or ill fitting. Layers photograph the best so if the temperatures are not too hot, try dressing in layers by adding sweaters, cardigans, or blazers.

Prepare several different looks to maximize the time you have with your photographer. Take a picture in each outfit beforehand and send it to your photographer for feedback. She might suggest adding an accessory or altering the look in some way.

Consider the different seasons. If you are shooting at an indoor location you are able to wear a variety of clothing for different seasons. You dont have the same flexibility with outdoor shoots. If there is snow on the ground a cute sun dress is going to be a tad confusing.

USING PROPS

Bring props that are relevant to your brand. Keep in mind different shots you will need for the type of content you release. If you are a writer, you might think of bringing your laptop, a notebook/journal or glasses.  Other props might be iPhone, coffee cup, magazines, camera, food, podcast mic, cooking utensils,  etc.

Ask your photographer to help you create some flatlay options to add to your image library. A flatly is when the photographer stands directly above the props and takes a picture. These are great for websites, marketing material. You can also get a ton of great flat lays from stock photographer sites. So if time is an issue I wouldn’t spend a ton of time on this.

LOCATIONS

Decide what type of location fits your look or vice versa.  Make sure to dress appropriately for your location.  If you want to shoot at a public location, let your photographer know ahead of time so she can research to see if photographers are allowed to shoot there or permits are required. If you are shooting outdoors, have a backup location in mind for inclement weather.

Your photographer might have some suggestions for locations as well.  If you want more than one location, discuss with your photographer so she/he can plan accordingly. Your photographer will want to get optimal lighting at every location so let them know the locations ahead of time. Communicate with your photographer as much as possible on all the details.

SHOT LISTS

Have a shot list prepared. Your photographer might have a different vision than you so you will want to make sure youre on the same page.  Take the time to screenshot poses and shots that you like.  Have a list of shots in your phone or written down. Give this to your photographer.  Your photographer will appreciate this because she will know exactly what you are looking for.

TURNOVER

Be sure to ask ahead of time how long it will take to get your photos back. Be respectful of your photographer. If her turnover time states on her website 2-3 weeks, dont tell her you have a deadline and demand them in one week.  Editing images can take anywhere from 3-6 hours and more than likely you are not her only client.

PHOTO RELEASE

Ask for a photo release. Depending on the contract, the photographer  typically owns the rights to the images, but can provide clients with a photo release—giving them permission to make copies. If you decide to print the images, certain labs require a photo release.

It is important to have great professional pictures of yourself to solidify your brand. Showing up on your social media is how you build relationships with your audience. You want them to feel connected to you and showing your face is the best way to do that. Now you know how to have a successful branding photoshoot. I hope this was helpful for you as you plan your own branded photoshoot!

Optimizing Your Instagram Profile

Optimizing Your Instagram Profile

Optimizing Your Instagram Profile

Optimizing Your Instagram Profile

If a potential client dropped in on your Instagram, would they be clear about what you do? Would people think you have a business or would they think you were an influencer? One of the first things people look at is your Instagram profile. Which is why Optimizing Your Instagram Profile is a must!

Your Instagram bio can include details of your business, contact information, highlights, call to action and more. In order to draw your ideal client, you must optimize your Instagram profile.

You want an Instagram profile that clearly highlights what you offer, showcases your talents, and reinforces your brand. By making a few small tweaks, you can create an Instagram that will draw people in.

Here are 5 steps to take your Instagram profile from good to great!

PROFILE PICTURE

Choose a profile picture that shows your personality. This is your first impression, and you want to show your audience you are a real person and not just a logo. Choosing the perfect Instagram picture can really set you apart. You are at the center of your brand; people are loyal to people, not logos. Consider the initial visit to your profile like a first date: you want to make an impact. You want your potential client curious to know more. The more you show your face, the more engagement you will start to see.

Invest in some good brand photo shoot. Having a library of great pictures to choose from will improve your brand credibility. Make sure that your images reflect your brand. Who are you trying to attract? Makes sure your images reflect what you want to attract.

PROFILE DESCRIPTION

You want your Instagram bio to be as clear and concise as possible.  You are only allowed to use 150 characters—make them count! To appeal to your target client, start by creating a rough draft using the following formula:

Who + Problem + Solution + Results

Who is your ideal client? What is their problem? How can you help solve their problem? What result will they get by working with you?

Once you have identified these elements, narrow it down to 1-2 powerful sentences. Consider implementing some emoji’s into this statement to add some personality.

CTA

Call to action. You always want to include a call to action, not only in your profile but in everything you do with marketing. Walk potential clients to the next step. Tell them what to do next. Your call to action can be schedule a consult, grab a freebie, or watch a free training. But make sure you are telling them what the next thing to do is.

PROFILE LINK

It is important to have a link in your profile. Typically, we default to our website link, but there are better options for our profile link. Your ultimate goal is to get potential clients to purchase a service or product from you.  For effective marketing, you want to always have a call to action. Make your call to action (CTA) so strong and descriptive that visitors immediately click the link in your bio. You want to be constantly moving potential clients towards committing to your brand.

If your goal is to grow your newsletter list, offer a freebie for first-time subscribers. If you want a client to schedule a consult, use a scheduling link. Place the link to your shop in the profile when you are launching programs or products. Your profile link should be directional and specific.

Instagram only allows one link so consider using a bio tool like Linktree, Milkshake, LinkFolio, etc. Here is a little pro tip – Create one on your website to improve your SEO.

HIGHLIGHT BUBBLES

Using this is a great way to highlight different areas of your business. You have the option to save specific stories to designated highlight bubbles. When youre adding to your highlights section, think of the key areas you want to showcase for your business and how to keep those highlights in line with your brand. Organize your highlight bubbles in order of relevance.

Here is a little pro-tip too about highlight bubbles. If you post things in your story with links those links stay active. So, a highlight bubble for a podcast or your freebies is a great idea.

INSTAGRAM STORIES

Instagram Stories are a great way to share behind the scenes, clips, or simply create mini stories by using text, photos, or even GIFs. Using Instagram stories is a great way to connect with your audience. Video is a great way to show your audience the person behind the logo. The videos last 24 hours unless they are saved to highlight bubbles. Similar to posting, the more you use this feature, the more audience engagement you will create. There are so many tools and features available to help you get the most out of your Instagram stories.

Pro-Tip – You can repurpose and repost things in your stories by going to Insights-Archives and you will find all your stories that you have posted there. The only caveat is if you added a link the link won’t work.

Take some time to scrutinize your profile. Ensure that it is written with clarity and is cohesive with your brand. The next time someone checks out your profile, they will have no doubts as to what you are offering.
