Understanding Keywords For SEO

Understanding Keywords For SEO

Have you ever Googled your business? If you come up on the first page, you should be doing the happy dance. If not, its time to get to work. Ranking on the first page of Google takes effort, but using the right keywords can help you get there. When you take the time to research, select, and implement the best keywords for SEO, it boosts your visibility and helps your business grow. When you begin understanding keywords for SEO you will see the results.

WHAT ARE KEYWORDS?

Keywords are topics or ideas that give an overview of  your content.  When it comes to SEO, keywords or key phrases are what searchers use when they are looking for more information for a specific topic.

When you market your business online, you want to make sure your content is beneficial and intentional to your ideal client. Doing this will attract your ideal client and increase the possibility of converting them to customers.

One of the first steps in your SEO strategy should be to research and create a list of keywords that would attract your ideal clients. Putting in the effort up front will minimize your work and lay the foundation for all other SEO efforts. With this being said, make sure your keywords are highly effective and relevant.

WHAT ARE LONG-TAIL KEYWORDS?

Long-tail keyword refers a combination of multiple & specific words relevant to a topic. It is best to optimize your pages and posts with a long-tail keywords. Long-tail keywords have lower search volumes, but attract more relevant traffic. Long-tail keywords are less competitive but can be geared towards your specific niche.

For example:

Realtor

Residential Realtor

Houston Residential Realtor

Houston Designer and Residential Realtor

The more specific your keywords are, the less competitive they become. If someone searches realtor,” you will be competing with billions of other results. Using highly specific, long-tail keywords gives you a better chance of being noticed by the very people looking for you.

Another example of a long-tail keyword can be a question or phrase. For example, someone might do a search for “How to lose weight after 40”. If you are a weightless coach that group of words would be great for a your website, a blog, or a podcast if that is commonly searched for. A few great tools to use to find commonly searched long-tail keywords would be the search tool on Google, Pinterest, or Youtube. You can put in a couple popular words and the search tool with give you suggested searches. These suggestions are commonly used phrases.

IMPORTANCE OF KEYWORDS

Without keywords, your content will be extremely difficult to find through a search engine. 95% of U.S. internet users use search engines every single month. Without keywords, you are limiting your exposure. If youre going to take the time to blog, do your due diligence and make sure to maximize your efforts.

WEBSITE KEYWORDS

Keywords are not just reserved for your blog; your website should utilize keywords as well. Your keywords should be related to your businesses and the services you offer. Describe your work, the products you sell, the benefits you offer, etc. If you were looking for your specific service, what would you keywords would you search?  Use those keywords throughout the pages of your website.  Dont spam your site with keywords; use them organically.

Remember though that every page on your website is indexed and ranked separately so don’t just optimize your home page. Take the time to create pages for different offers and/or services and do research for keywords for each.  Also, make sure you are using keywords on your images too. There are lots of searches using the image feature.

PICKING THE RIGHT KEYWORDS

First, create a way to organize your keywords. This can be an Excel file, Word doc, etc.  With any marketing strategy you want to think like your ideal client. Although we know our businesses so intimately, try to think about what your ideal client wants. Just because you know the answers and information in your field, dont assume your ideal client does too.  Remember to include adjectives or different variations with your keywords. Use my best friend, the thesaurus. 😜

There are several resources for finding keywords available. Like I had previously mentioned Google, Pinterest, and Youtube are the free ones. If you use the Chrome browser you can search for some Chrome Extensions that help you find keywords. I have used the Chrome Extension, Keywords EveryWhere.

It doesn’t take a lot of time to create an entire database of keywords and long-tail keywords for your niche. Once you have created the list implement them in to your website, and then start blogging. SEO doesn’t give you the instant gratification that social media does, but it has a way longer life-span. It takes time and consistency, but it will pay off.

SEO doesnt have to be overwhelming. Break it down and work on it a task at a time. Learning how keywords work is the first step to improving your rank. Traffic generation takes time and can be a process. When you gain an understanding of keywords for SEO, you can utilize different sorts of traffic options and will start to see results.

The Importance of True Friendships

The Importance of True Friendships

I have mentioned before that I pick a word every year to focus on. A few years ago I was having a bunch of turmoil in my life. It seemed like I was being consumed with so much relationships drama and it was sucking my energy and my joy. When the first of the year rolled around the word that I picked was “Nurture”. I was going to stop putting my energy into fixing all my unhealthy relationships, but instead I was going to start nurturing my good relationships. This was such a pivotal time in my life. It made me reflect and ponder on my friendships.

The Importance of True Friendships

I remember when I was younger someone told me about the importance of true friendships. They continued to tell me that you can count your true friendships on one hand. I have to be honest, I didn’t believe that to be true. I’ve always been very social and love meeting new people. I have moved several times throughout my adult life, and with each move came new experiences and amazing friendships.

I often describe myself as a collector of people. Over the years, I have maintained many friendships. The occasional text message, phone call, and Christmas card are shared. I feel grateful for these friendships and it puts a smile on my face and joy in my heart when I reflect on the memories that we created together. At one time I naively thought many of them to be true friendships. I did not really discern between “friendship” and “true friendship.”

It’s strange as you get older and life happens. I have realized that the unsolicited advice I had received many years ago took on a whole new meaning. My true friendships, my inner circle, my people began to be revealed.  Then my circle got smaller, but my vision got clearer. I realized there’s strength in loyalty and devotion, not numbers. Today when I think of these friendships my throat tightens, my heart races, and tears fill my eyes. I am overwhelmed with gratitude when I think how these friendships carried me through some of my darkest hours. These friendships have become some of my most prized possessions.

I have friends that I consider family. They stuck with me and liked me when I didn’t really like myself. Many of you may know that I lost my 14 year old son in 2017. When you go through something as difficult as losing a child it changes you. It also, grants you a new perspective of what and who are really important. You weed out the things and people that suck your energy. In a way, it’s freeing and empowering.

When I reflect on some of my friendships I find myself asking: what makes these friendships so deep and meaningful? The answer for me, is vulnerability, loyalty, honesty, and confidence.

Vulnerabilty

When we are vulnerable, we are our most authentic, real, true selves. There is no hiding, no dishonestly, no manipulating and no competition when we are vulnerable. We share our weaknesses, our fears and our failures knowing that there is no judgement. When we connect deeply with others we divulge our struggles and fears. Our cries for help are heard even though the words are not spoken. We show up for one another even though we are struggling to show up for ourselves and we become relatable and connect on a deeper level when we show our vulnerable side.

The friendships that I consider true friendships are the ones that I know I can say exactly what I am thinking or feeling and they will love me regardless how ridiculous, selfish, or foolish I may sound. They love me for the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Loyalty

The next important factor to me is loyalty. When I looked up loyalty in the good ole dictionary it stated that loyalty was a strong feeling of support or allegiance. So when I think of loyalty in a friendship I think of these things:

They celebrate each other’s successes and are never going to be jealous of your success and they are genuinely happy for you whenever you have wins. Your wins are their wins.

A loyal friend will always stand by you when times are tough. You know you can get through breakups, illnesses, and other life drama because they’ll always be there by your side. You are never alone. They might not always agree with your choices, but they’ll still give you emotional support. They’ll always be there to catch you whenever you fall, and will never make you feel worse about the situation with, “I told you so’s.”

They stand up for each other. People will say all kinds of things about you. But they will always stand up for you no matter what.

Like all relationships, friendships can fade if only one person is willing to put in the effort to make it last. Friendship is a two way street. People feel loved and cared about when what they offer in a relationship is reciprocated. When you are making an effort to stay in each other’s lives after so much time has passed, that’s loyalty

Honesty

They keep it real. A good friend is someone who won’t always tell you what you want to hear, but will always tell you what you need to hear. A real friend can call you on your crap. You can be open to the criticism no matter how much you don’t want to hear it.

A real friend wants you to be the best and sometimes that means telling them the hard truth. When you can have a good honest friends you always make up. All relationships have their share of ups and downs. When you’re friends with someone for a long time, you’re guaranteed to fight at some point. But if you can be honest with friends will be able to come together after adversity as long as they’re not compromising their own integrity by doing so.

Confidence

I think confidence goes hand-in-hand in vulnerability, loyalty, and honesty. When you combine all of those characteristics you gain confidence that you will be loved and accepted and you can be your true self.

When you are confident in yourself you have the ability to be confident in your relationships. You don’t overthink and over analyze every word or action, but instead you can show up and nurture your relationships.

When you have confidence in yourself you can put more energy into your friendship. You can be a builder, you build others up because you see the best in them. You want your friend’s success and happiness as much as you want your own and you have the ability to help them cultivate that in their own lives.

True friends are one of the simple pleasures in life. I wouldn’t be me with out them. When we find those friends, the ones with whom we can be authentic and share our true selves, have each others backs, can be honest with, and can build one another, those are the friendships you hold on to. You soon realize the importance of true friendships. Those are the friendships you nurture, cherish and devote your time to. When we find ourselves in relationships like these, we cherish them, these are the friendships you count on one hand.

SEO Basics

One of the things I work on with my clients is SEO. SEO can be really intimidating for a lot of people, but it doesn’t have to be. I often tell my clients pick one or two things in your business and get really good at them. Take the time to learn these processes or systems and then be consistent.

SEO is one of those things entrepreneurs tend to ignore because it feels too complicated, but I promise you it is not. There are so many advantages to putting in the time with your own SEO. This can be done by first optimizing your website and second consistently putting out content within your niche.

SEO BASICS

The average person uses Google 4-5 times a day. Google dominates the search engine market. Research shows that there are 8.5 billion searches per day. It is the number one place people go when they are looking to solve a problem. If you are wondering where your ideal audience spends their time, chances are on Google.

I see a lot of entrepreneurs focusing all of their time to social media, which isn’t a bad thing. However, SEO has a way longer life span. This means that you create content on social media and it is buried within a few days and the chances of it being seen again is very slim, however you can write a blog post on a similar topic and will have a better chance of being seen again later.

What is SEO

If I haven’t convinced you to put some effort into improving your SEO, I will pressure you some more. 😉 I want you to understand SEO, that way it won’t be so overwhelming to you. I am going to try to break it down for you over a few different episodes so stay with me.

Let’s start with the basics. What is SEO? Search Engines Optimization, also known as SEO, is the process of affecting the visibility of your website or blog in a search engines unpaid results.  In other words, when an individual does an internet search, a search engine will provide the best results.  The highest-ranked result appears first and so on. The higher ranked results or pages translate to more traffic and more sales. Its important to know what is SEO and how it works so you can leverage it in your business.

MArketing

Many people use SEO to help market their business. Because billions of people refer to Google first when looking for a service, product, or question, so SEO is an important marketing tool.  The challenge with SEO is that search engines are in a constant state of change. SEO isnt something you do once and never look at again.  It is an ongoing process; because of this, consistency is a key factor.

Google often does algorithm updates.  These tweaks can change the outcome of the search results. No one (except Google) knows the formulas that determine the results.  Some people get frustrated with the unpredictability and decide it isnt worth their time, however social media has similar unpredictable. Online marketing in general is ever-changing.

SEO Strategy

Many people reap great results from SEO and if you are an online business, I think its beneficial to have an SEO strategy.  There are many things you can do that require minimal effort and will help you stand out from your competition.

You want to drive as much traffic as possible to your website.  Understanding and learning how to implement SEO has lots of benefits. There are different types of SEO you should pay attention to.  One type is On-Page SEO.  This refers to the SEO on different pages of your website (home, about, work with, etc). There are elements you need to be aware of:

KEYWORDS

One of the very first things you should do is determine the most ideal keywords. Make a list of keywords that your ideal client might search for. You may to do some keyword research to discover the keywords that rank the highest. There are many free
tools
available to help you with your search. Once you have created your keyword list, implement those
keywords
throughout your website descriptions, blog,
subheadings,
url, etc.

TITLE TAG

I once thought I had to think up a clever title for any blog post I
wrote.
I didnt realize my clever titles were hindering my SEO
progress.
Titles need to be straight forward and always contain
keywords.
When determining a title, think of longtailed
(descriptive
sentences) keywords that your ideal client might type
into
the search bar.

URL

In the settings sections of your website, there is a section called permalinks.  Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual pages and blog posts. A permalink is the web address used to link to your content. You can set up your permalinks to be the title of your page or post.  For example, I have titled this blog post What is SEO and How Does it Work.” My WordPress website automatically generates the URL as www.brittnischroeder.com/what-is-seo-and-how-does-it-work. By creating this URL it will help improve my SEO.

META DESCRIPTION

The meta description is the brief description you see when search results appear.  It is about 155 characters or a couple of sentences summarizing a pages content followed by an ellipse (…). Search engines show the meta description in search results mostly when the searched-for phrase is within the description, so optimizing the meta description is crucial for on-page SEO.

SUBHEADINGS

A subheading is a subsection of your content. Subheadings help users and search engines to read and understand text. They act as main points for the readers and make it easier for people to understand what a post or page is about. Headings also define which parts of your content are important, and show how theyre interconnected.  For example, I have used Title Tag, URL, Meta Description, etc. as subheadings in this post.

INTERNAL LINKS

Internal links are a type of hyperlink on a webpage to another page or resource within your website or domain.  An essential part of SEO is keeping your reader on your website as long as possible.  The longer a reader stays on your website the better your website will rank.

When you link different content, the goal is to direct your reader to more information within your site.   For example, I might write an article on improving engagement on Instagram and link a reference to ideal clients to a blog post I wrote on the subject.

EXTERNAL LINKS

External links are similar to internal links. However, they direct you to other domains and link outside information that supports your content. The quality of the external link makes a difference.  You want to add trustworthy and informative website links to help improve your credibility.

Whenever you link to another site, that site will see that youre linking to them. Then, they are more likely to return the favor by linking to your site.

External links are a great way to reach out, make connections, and get your content seen.  This is a great source of free traffic and will help improve your SEO.  Linking to outside websites will not hurt your page rank as long as the link comes from legitimate sites. External links are more valuable if it links to popular and high-ranking sites that are related to your content.

IMAGE NAMES

The alt and title attributes of an image are commonly referred to as alt tag, alt text, or title tag. Image file names alert Google and other search engine crawlers as to the subject matter of the image. When readers are searching for content they may search for images and then be directed to your website. When it comes to SEO use creative descriptive, keyword-rich file names. Always use images and image names that are relevant to your content.

Search engine optimization can be a huge part of getting traffic to your blog or website.  When you do it correctly and are consistent, you will see the results. There are helpful tools such as Yoast SEO plugin that help you implement these tools.  Remember, like most things, it takes time! So be patient.  If you implement these tools, you will start to see an increase in your traffic over time.

How to Get Great Testimonials

How to Get Great Testimonials

How To Get Great Testimonials

Whether I am shopping online, trying out a new restaurant, or searching for a new car, I always read the reviews & testimonials. Some studies show that up to 70% of people trust a brand more after reading a positive review. I usually read the top reviews first and then make my way to the negative ones. I take these with a grain of salt, because I know there can be some crazies out there. However, multiple bad reviews give me pause.

How to Get Great Testimonials

Do you know the power of testimonials? Testimonials are one of the most important things you should include in your marketing. Testimonials build credibility and customers buy from brands they trust.

There are several ways you can utilize testimonials for clients.

WEBSITE

WEBSITE- It is important to have testimonials on your website. You can do this a few different ways. You can have an entire page devoted to testimonials. Use a catchy tab like: What People are Saying”, Raves and Reviews”, or “ The Fan Club”.  You can also add them sporadically throughout your website, so when viewers are reading the content, they can see what clients are saying about your work.

Social Media

SOCIAL MEDIA- Ask clients to leave you reviews on your Facebook page, Linked-In, Instagram, Yelp, Google or any other network you use. There are so many networks that people use to find businesses. Make it a point to encourage clients to leave reviews and give testimonials.

Newsletters

NEWSLETTERS –Make it a habit of gathering testimonials. Create a testimonial folder and pull from that folder often to support your business.  Include testimonials in your newsletters. When you need credibility to launch a program or promote yourself, you will have testimonials that will create trust and encourage clients to commit.

How To Get Great Testimonials

Asking for a testimonial might feel a little nerve racking. You may hesitate because you feel like you are bothering or inconveniencing clients. Dont let this thought hold you back from progressing in your business. If people are happy with the product or service you provided, they are likely more than willing to help. If you provided them with an amazing product or experience, they will be happy to share their experience.

Dont wait too long to ask. Send a request for feedback as soon as the project or service is completed. Create a system that is built into your workflow. For example, as soon as your program is finished or your products are delivered, follow up within a couple of days. Follow up with genuine intent to ensure they are satisfied. Inquire about their experience and ask how things are going. Conclude by asking if they would be willing to fill out a questionnaire regarding their experience.

Make it as easy and specific as possible. Create a form that is user friendly. I use typeform.com.  Dont overwhelm them with too many questions. You dont want all your testimonials or reviews to be the same, so ask them specifics about their experience.  For example, with my business coaching clients, I might ask them to give me a review on the time management portion of the program or the branding segment. This way I have a diverse collection of testimonials that cover specifics in my program.

After your client has given you the testimonial, always make sure to say thank you and let them know how much it means to you. End with a heartfelt gesture, letting them know you are available if they need anything more from you.

The Art of In-Person Networking

THE ART OF IN PERSON NETWORKING

Networking comes naturally to me. I love people and my inquisitive nature is a catalyst for creating lasting relationships. I was in shock when my extroverted persona felt like a fish out of water when I recently started attending networking events in an effort to build my business. The good news is I showed up, the bad news—I was completely unprepared. I didnt yet understand the true art of in-person networking.

The Art of In-Person Networking

I went to my first few networking events with one purpose: to find clients. Spoiler alert: it was a misguided intention. After attending several events, I questioned their effectiveness. But I was determined to keep attending. Somewhere along the line, I started forming unexpected friendships with like-minded entrepreneurs. We had so much in common and I felt a connection to them. My mindset shifted. Now I no longer just cared about getting business; my focus changed to connecting with and helping others.

I soon began learning the foundation of our success in business and life centers around relationships. When we create and strengthen relationships with genuine and authentic intent, success will follow. Realizing this completely shifted my mindset. I focus on getting to know others. Intently listening to what they say and look for opportunities to serve them, not caring if they became my clients. I forged authentic relationships and my business began to grow organically.

The Power of Personal Connection

I am constantly reminding myself of the power of personal connection and that human interaction accelerates relationship building. You can learn more about a person in 10 minutes than you can in months online. You have the ability to not only hear words but to see and feel emotion. Because we have the ability to only show what we want online, sometimes relationships there can be filtered and misguiding. But in person you are more likely to see vulnerability; that is when the real connection begins.

Our ultimate goal is to become memorable. That is marketing. When you build relationships, people know who you are and what you do. They might not have a referral that day, that week, or that month, but eventually, they will, and that is why it is important to continue to authentically nurture your relationships and become unforgettable.

Ways to Network

Almost every where you go you can find networking groups. They are specifically designed for businesses to network. If you are new to an area this is always a great place to start, but I have found there are so many other ways to network that often have better results.

Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Volunteering
  • Joining Neighborhood/area Facebook Groups
  • Seeking out other like-minded individuals and setting up a time to go to lunch
  • Getting involved at your kids schools
  • Creating your own group
  • Attending conferences and events
  • Signup for an exercise group or class

I think too often we hide behind our computers and phones and neglect in-person networking. Meeting with people and connecting with people will leave a more lasting effect.

I have grown so much in business and in my personal life through networking. Inspiration, encouragement, and empowerment is constantly present. I have made new relationships that I otherwise would have missed. I have learned the power and art of in-person networking. Building relationships is the key to not only success but happiness.

I want to challenge you to get out there and networking in-person.

Task Batching In Your Business

Task Batching In Your Business

REDEFINE PODCAST

Title

Task Batching In Your Business

My mind is always going a million miles an hour. I am easily distracted and I often am jumping from one thing to another. Is that a good thing? Hmmmm. Not always. I have been known to accidentally tell my client they need to clean their room.

I used to pride myself on being an amazing multi-tasker. And while its true that I can get a lot done in a short time, unfortunately the quality can end up being subpar. I have learned you really cant do more than one thing at once—at least not properly. Dividing your time and your attention, even if you are doing it equally, means you are giving 50% of your focus to each. People cant multitask very well, and when people say they can, theyre deluding themselves. So although it seems you are being productive, the opposite is probably true. When we are constantly jumping from task to task, we become easily distracted by outside elements (social media, text messages, emails, etc.). Refocusing takes up small amounts of time that eventually add up to large amounts of time. When you use task batching to increase productivity in your business you will find time you didnt realize you had.

One of the most effective tools I have found when running a business is task batching. Batching is grouping similar tasks into continuous sessions of work time.  So instead of dispersing my time to several different tasks a day, I will designate a larger amount of time to focusing on mass production. By doing this, I become ultra-focused on that particular task and can accomplish a great deal more. For example, I will designate a couple hours a month to write all my newsletters for that month. This way I am focused, the task gets completed, and I dont have to think about it again until next month. I can use my brain power to focus on other tasks that need to be done.

If you implement a batching process into your workflow, you will find there is less task-switching, more focus, more efficiency, and more productivity. The batching method can be applied to several aspects of your life. This will allow you to get more done in a short amount of time and free up your time in general.

Here a few places you can use the batch process:

BLOGGING

Although it is amazing to get a lot done in one day, be realistic and give your brain smaller intervals that it can better handle. Personally, I have a 2-hour max when it comes to blogging.  You can break this process up and designate time to batch ideas, outlines, and writing.  By breaking down the process, you can be more intentional when it is time to work on your blog.

NEWSLETTER

If you send out newsletters in your business, schedule a time to batch them. This can also be broken up into sessions. Schedule a time to plan out your newsletters for a quarter. You can pick a topic and schedule all your newsletters for three months. Then at a different time you can batch-write the content.

PODCASTS

If you are a podcaster, you can record 4-5 at a time. Set a time and a day you are going to record, and schedule all guests within that time. This will alleviate the extra time you would have spent setting up and taking down your podcast equipment. Remember: minutes add up to hours.

SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT

Instead of stressing every day about what you want to post on social media, add this to your list of tasks that needs to be batched. I batch my

social media tasks into three parts: writing, scheduling, and engaging. For all my business-related social media posts, I write and schedule them on a weekly basis. This is all done in one day and then I don’t have to even think about it for the rest of that week. Completing this task all at once frees up time for me to reply to comments and engage with my audience online.

EMAILS

Emails are unavoidable. They are a necessity in business and in life, but they can also be such a time suck. In order to avoid spending hours a day mired in your inbox, learn to batch this task. Try to visit your inbox three times a day. Each time for no more than 30 minutes. Once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once at the end of your day.  It’s important to find a healthy balance between being responsive without it consuming your day. Batching this task into three short stints during your day is one of the best systems.

HOUSEWORK

Housework is the ideal task for batching. Cleaning doesn’t require much mental focus; however, it can seem to take over our time. Instead of doing multiple loads of laundry throughout the week, designate a day that you will do laundry and try to get it all done. Pick a specific day that you are going to clean your floors and do them all at once. Give yourself a time limit and when the time is up you are finished. Don’t get distracted with all the things that you want to clean, but focus on the things that need to be cleaned. Everything else can wait.

PLANNING

I do weekly planning every Sunday, and honestly it’s probably the only reason my life hasn’t fallen apart (yet). Instead of taking things day by day and making a to-do list from scratch for the day ahead of me (this can get very overwhelming), I sit down on Sunday to get a big-picture view of the upcoming week and plan out absolutely everything that I need to get done. That means less thinking and decision-making throughout the week—something I find indispensable.

EDUCATION

You should constantly be striving for self-improvement. This is one thing we don’t make a priority in our business, yet it can make the biggest impact. Instead of picking up tips and tricks here and there, designate time every week to learn about something that can benefit you in your business. Make this a habit and do it in a time that you can be focused and absorb and apply the new information.

FINANCES

Because you are literally doing everything as an entrepreneur, it can be tempting to let overwhelm lead you to neglect your finances. However, it is essential to your success to stay on top of your finances. Set aside time to pay your bills, record receipts, and track incoming and outgoing income. Again, one of the main benefits of task batching is complete focus. By batching your finances, you will become more aware of and organized with your money.

PERSONAL NEEDS

For you workaholics out there, batching personal needs might be just the thing! Self-care is a must. When you take care of yourself and give yourself time to re-energize, you will find more motivation for your workdays. Try to schedule 1-2 hour blocks to pamper yourself, catch up with a friend, or take a yoga class.

As an entrepreneur, the only person you have to be accountable to is yourself, so it is important to find systems that bolster your productivity. Task batching to increase productivity in your business creates the right environment and habits that work for you is an investment in your own success.
